I recently had the privilege of visiting Aalto University and the University of Jyvaskyla in Finland. These two institutions, celebrated globally for their academic excellence, are actively exploring ways to increase their international student numbers and establish stronger partnerships with UK institutions through Transnational Education (TNE) initiatives.
The Finnish education system is widely regarded as one of the best in the world, and it was inspiring to witness Finland’s deep commitment to quality, accessibility, and educational innovation. From world-class research facilities to an educational philosophy that values individual growth and societal impact, Finnish universities provide a model that, in many respects, complements the strengths of the UK’s own higher education system.
Comparing UK and Finnish Higher Education: Investment and priorities
While both the UK and Finland strive for excellence in education, their approaches reflect different priorities. Finland’s education system places a strong emphasis on inward investment in research, sustainability, and educational equity, ensuring high standards of accessibility and quality that the UK could certainly learn from. Meanwhile, the UK’s approach to education, shaped by centuries of tradition and a significant international reach, often focuses on innovation, employability, and global partnerships.
This visit was a powerful reminder of the benefits of mutual learning. The UK’s reputation for world-class education makes it an attractive partner for Finnish institutions looking to broaden their global footprint. At the same time, the UK education sector could gain valuable insights from Finland’s strategic focus on quality of life, well-being, and equal access to education—an approach that has proven effective in enhancing student outcomes.
Looking forward: Learning and growing together
The potential for collaboration between UK and Finnish institutions is considerable. By working together, we can pursue joint research initiatives, student exchanges, and academic programmes that prepare students not only for today’s workforce but for a future of meaningful, impactful work.
